Selecting Your Ideal Baker
Where are you spending the most money?
Designing the cake for your wedding is one way that you can really exercise your creative freedom. Today, the choices for cake flavors, fillings, and decorations are endless and there is something sure to please everyone. When you're shopping for your wedding cake, it is a good idea to ask friends and family members for suggestions. In addition, below is a list of questions that may help you decide if a certain baker is right for you.
- Ask whether the baker can create a unique look for your cake or whether you must choose from certain styles. Take any pictures, fabrics, or flowers that you think may help him understand what you have in mind.
- Ask to see pictures of his work.
- Ask if you can arrange a tasting to sample various types of cakes that the baker offers.
- Ask about pricing. Wedding cakes are generally priced per person or per slice, but different flavors or fillings may also affect the price, so ask for a complete price list.
- Ask whether the baker works from fresh or frozen cakes. Some bakers do all of their baking at the beginning of the week and then freeze the cakes, leaving the decorating for the end of the week. Generally, the fresher a cake is, the better it will taste, but it is your decision as to what type you prefer.
- If you choose to garnish your cake with fresh flowers, ask if the baker will work with the florist or if you will be responsible for supplying the flowers.
- Ask whether the baker will deliver the cake or whether you will be responsible for picking it up. Also, find out if there is an extra charge for delivery.
- Ask how the cake pillars and stands are to be returned to the baker. Will he pick them up or will you be responsible for returning them?
